沼山
横井小楠，沼山津へ転居後，沼山とも称した。僕はこの号が好きだ。

堯舜孔子の道を明らかにし

には，小楠の理想が託されている。小楠は，本気だったのである。松浦は，こう説明する。

是れ豈天理に順ならんや
という小楠の詩も，
武家政権と儒教との近世二百数十年にわたるなれあい関係に終止符を打って，幕藩体制を百パーセント儒教主義に読み替え，読み替えたとおりの政治を本気で実現しようとしていた小楠の本心と見ることができる。すなわち，そこにあるのは，儒教の，革命論である。将軍や藩主の世襲原理の否定である（当然その論理の延長線上には必然的に天皇も来る）。
松浦玲は，その小楠伝の最後を，こう締めくくっている。
小楠は，最後まで儒学者であり，その儒学的理想を日本に実現し，世界に拡げようと念願し続ける政治家であった。小楠をここまで追跡してきた私には，彼の理想が，実現不可能な空想だとは思えない。多年講学し続け，その上，越前藩や幕府での実践を経た，ずっしり手ごたえのある思想だと感じられる。むろん小楠自身もそう自負していた。明治元年の廟堂では，おそらく彼一人が，自分を中心として世界に仁義の大道を敷くというほどの大構想を持ち，それを本気で実現するつもりだったのである。
暗殺は，その大構想を，まだ実現の緒にもつかないうちに絶ち切ってしまった。
しかし，世の中には，そうは思わない人がいて，神風連の源流，林櫻園を対比しながら，渡辺京二はいう。
（堯舜孔子の道を明らかにし云々の詩は）櫻園にいわせればこれはとほうもない誇大妄想というものであったろう。ヨーロッパ文明との接触はそれから「器械の術」だけをいただけばいいようなものではなく，小楠にとっての「大義」すなわち「堯瞬孔子の道」を必然的に崩壊させずにすまぬことを，彼はおそらく洞察していた…
という。こういうのを読んで，何の血も流さず，引き籠って冷ややかに評論を垂れる輩と思う。それはこれを書く著者渡辺京二も同じだ。蟹はおのれに似せて穴を掘る。

ところで，小楠の『学校問答書』『兵法問答書』を高杉晋作が筆写しており，編集者はそれを知らないまま，高杉の著作と思い込み，高杉晋作全集に高杉の著作物として載せられたというエピソードは，高杉が，福井藩での小楠の成果を見に行って，長州へ招こうとしたという逸話とともに，記憶されてよい。
